Event photo Dr Emma Costa and Prof Rafael de Souza Timmermann from ELIPRO Brazil presented at the 2025 conference of the Integrating Content and Language in Higher Education organization in Porto Alegre, Brazil. Emma Costa presented parts of her thesis Challenges of Implementing Traditional EMI Models in the Brazilian Context and Rafael Timmermann presented on Learners’ Perceptions of EMI and Internationalization at the Federal University of Pará.

Dr Nicola Galloway, ELINET Director and Senior Lecturer and Publications Lead, School of Education, The University of Glasgow will offer a lecture entitled: “Decolonizing English Medium Instruction in Higher Education: Challenging Linguistic Imperialism and Western Curricula through Global Englishes” as part of the Distinguished Lectures in Humanities series – on 29 November 2024 at the Faculty of Humanities, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU).

Sonia López-Serrano, coordinator of the ELINET TELL Strand and English Lecturer at Universidad de La Laguna, Spain, will present the paper “An in-depth exploration of EFL learners’ (dis)engagement paths during self-access web-based pragmatic instruction” at the 47th AEDEAN Conference, hosted by the Universidad Pablo de Olavide, Seville. 6–8 November 2024.

October 2024

Telma Gimenez, Senior Lecturer, Universidade Estadual de Londrina, ELINET Brazil, presented the paper “Notes for the development of EMI teachers in Brazil” at the 2nd Annual ELINET Conference – Global Voices, Local Impact: Education, Language, and Diversity, hosted by the Universidade Federal do Pará, Bragança campus, 24–26 October 2024. She also joined Kyria Finardi and Simone Sarmento on a panel entitled “Navigating the Role of English in Education across Brazil.”
Dr. Elif Kemaloglu-Er presented a virtual paper entitled “Navigating AI in Education: Perspectives from English Majors and Their Instructors” with Emin Kutlu at the 2nd Annual ELINET Conference – Global Voices, Local Impact: Education, Language, and Diversity at the Federal University of Pará’s Bragança campus in Brazil and online, 24–26 October 2024; a virtual paper entitled “Integrating Local Insights with Global Reach” at the same conference; and a virtual paper entitled “Beyond Borders: Integrating Local and Global Perspectives in Project-Based Language Learning” at the Technology for Second Language Learning Conference (TSLL 2024) at Iowa State University and online on 24–26 October 2024.
Dr. Elif Kemaloglu-Er, as a keynote speaker, gave a virtual speech entitled “Embracing Diversity with Innovative Practices: The Pedagogy of Global Englishes” at ICLAP2024 – 10th International Conference of the Linguistic Association of Pakistan, held in collaboration with the University of Balochistan in Quetta, Pakistan and online, 3–5 October 2024.
She also presented the papers: “From Code to Verse: Evaluating AI in Poetry Translation and Pedagogical Implications” (with Berke Sahan and Utku Altınok) at the Third International Language for All Conference at Cukurova University in Adana, Türkiye, 17–18 October 2024; “Translating Tomorrow: AI Insights through the Eyes of English Major Students and Instructors” (with Inci Akkuzu and Emin Kutlu) at the same conference.
Soe Marlar Lwin, Singapore University of Social Sciences, ELINET EMI Professional Development strand coordinator, gave an invited keynote speech on “Bridging TESOL and EMI: A Focus on Tasks” at the 1st International Conference on Foreign Languages and Instruction at Universitas Negeri Padang, Indonesia, 17–18 October 2024.

Dr Marcelo Kremer, ELINET Portugal Co-Lead Coordinator and Post-Doctoral Researcher at the University of Aveiro, delivered a lecture entitled “Internationalisation of Higher Education and English Language Specialists: Enhancing English Medium Instruction” at the Graduate Program in English: Linguistic and Literary Studies, Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (Florianópolis, Brazil), 16 October 2024.
Alexandra Treder, DAAD Lecturer and Assistant Professor at FES Acatlán, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, and coordinator of the ELINET Strand Language Education and Multilingualism (LEM), participated in the 4th Andean German Teachers’ Congress in Sucre, Bolivia, 15–18 October 2024. She delivered a talk entitled “Die Einbindung lebensweltlicher Mehrsprachigkeit in den Bildungssystemen Deutschlands und Mexikos: Eine Untersuchung historischer, gesellschaftlicher und bildungspolitischer Kontexte”.

MULTIFARE stands for Multilinguismo em Contextos Familiares, Religiosos e Educacionais (Multilingualism in Family, Religious, and Educational Contexts).
Dr. Davronzhon Gaipov, Associate Professor at SDU University (Kazakhstan) and ELINET Coordinator, participated in a roundtable discussion on “Critical Dynamics of EMI” held on 10–11 October 2024, organized in collaboration with SDU University and ELINET, featuring talks from ELINET and Kazakh scholars.
Dr. Gulnissa Zhunnusova, Associate Professor at KIMEP University (Kazakhstan) and ELINET Lead Coordinator, and Dr Davronzhon Gaipov participated in a roundtable on “Critical Dynamics of EMI” in collaboration with SDU University and ELINET, 10–11 October 2024.
